Massage and Energy Work Therapies offered at Sunu
The word Shiatsu is Japanese. “Shi-” refers to finger, and “-atsu” means pressure. The Japanese Ministry of Health defines shiatsu as “a form of manipulation by thumbs, fingers and palms without the use of instruments, mechanical or otherwise, to apply pressure to the human skin to correct internal malfunctions, promote and maintain health, and treat specific diseases. Techniques used in shiatsu include stretching, holding, and most commonly, leaning body weight into various points along key channels.”
Swedish/Deep Tissue Massage
The most widely recognized and commonly used category of massage is the Swedish massage. Swedish massage techniques vary from light to vigorous and use five styles of strokes. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber or with the fibers) and vibration/shaking. Swedish massage has shown to be helpful in reducing pain and joint stiffness, relieving symptoms of osteoarthritis, and reducing stress.

Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create Myofascial restrictions that can produce pressure of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, CAT scans, etc.)
Neuromuscular/Trigger Point Massage Therapy (NMT)
Neuromuscular therapy is a specialized form of deep tissue massage in which digital pressure and friction are used to release areas of strain in the muscle. These areas of strain are called tender or trigger points and are the cause of muscular pain symptoms. Trigger points are areas of hypersensitivity in a muscle caused by overstrain. These are small areas of the muscle in which there is a contracture of muscular tissue (think of a tiny snag in a knit sweater). Blood and nutrients are lacking in that part of the muscle and therefore the muscle spindle is unable to relax. Trigger points cause pain, fatigue and weakness in the muscle.
Pre-Natal and Post-Partum Massage
Pre-Natal and post-partum massage therapy is similar to regular massage therapy but it is customized to the needs of pregnant women and their changing bodies. Trained prenatal massage therapists knows where a pregnant women’s likely sore and swollen spots will be and may be able to provide some relief and also know which techniques and areas to avoid. Several of SuNu’s skilled massage therapists are trained in pre-natal massage and can provide a customized pre-natal or post-partum massage experience.

Craniosacral Therapy (CST)
Cranioacral therapy is a non-manipulative approach to touch therapy during which the therapist orients their awareness to the health of the client. This informed touch engages the central nervous system and the body’s natural abilities to resolve both physiological and psycho-emotional imbalances. It can provide relief from chronic pain and headaches and accelerate post-operative and injury related healing. Verbal skills can also be employed to embrace the client’s imagination as a resource to relieve stored trauma. This gentle approach creates a sense of safety in the present body and is well suited for pregnant moms, children and babies, and anyone seeking to reduce stress, rejuvenate and heal.
